Filmmaker Siddharth Anand’s latest cinematic offering is the aerial actioner Fighter. Following the release of its teaser and trailer, the film was compared to the Hollywood movie Top Gun. Sharing his understanding behind Indian audience’s habit of comparing Hindi films with Hollywood ones, Siddharth says it’s a result of past mistakes made by filmmakers and the audience’s inability to respect their own stories.

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Siddharth said that while some filmmakers in the past have copied work from Hollywood, the audience now has to start respecting the genuine work that several storytellers are offering.

He said, “Yes, we have had instances of taking inspiration blatantly from other films. Anything that you do now is (considered) a cheap copy of it (Hollywood movies). We as an audience have lost respect for our films, which I feel is very sad. Because Fighter is about fighter jets, the instant analogy was that it’s Top Gun. I think eventually when you saw the trailer, you realise that there is nothing to do with Top Gun.”

The filmmaker added, “But the only reference point is Top Gun so they’ll say that ‘oh they have copied Top Gun’. It’s all social media chatter, which is really out there to put your work down and negativity gets a lot of traction.”

Siddharth Anand, who has films like Pathaan and War to his credit, highlights how those seeking attention on social media use negativity as an effective tool.

“So you want to do that (seek attention on social media using negativity) so that people like, repost your comments or comment on it. It creates chatter because if you say something good, it never gets traction or any sort of comments. Negativity gets you attention. So the easiest thing is to put somebody else’s work down,” said the filmmaker.

Fighter stars Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone and Anil Kapoor in the lead roles. The crew behind Fighter was one of the largest in Bollywood history, shared Siddharth Anand.

“Fighter is a film that has 11,500 people in the end credtis. A lot of people have worked on it. It has the maximum crew any film has had, and they have worked really hard. So, to put the film down without seeing it is heartbreaking and annoying. But after you watch the film, there is no discussion of Top Gun or anything like that. We, the audience, don’t give a chance. People have done it in the past. People don’t respect our films, which we should start,” he concluded.

On the eighth day of its release, the film’s domestic box office collection stands at Rs 146.5 crore. The movie is expected to cross the Rs 150 crore mark over its second weekend.
