It’s almost hard to believe that five years have passed since the world lost Irrfan Khan. His absence remains deeply felt. Yet his presence continues to linger — in timeless performances, unforgettable dialogues, and the lasting impressions he left on cinema and its audience. For many, including filmmaker Shoojit Sircar, the idea of watching films without Irrfan is still difficult to process. Shoojit, who not only worked with him in Piku, but also shared a close bond, especially during his final days, has often remembered Irrfan with warmth and admiration in various interviews. On the occasion of his fifth death anniversary today, the filmmaker took to Instagram to share a heartfelt note in his memory. Irrfan’s son Babil and Rog (2005) co-star Pooja Bhatt also paid tribute to the actor in their Instagram posts.

“Wherever you are, I know you’re doing well and have probably made many new friends there,” Shoojit began, reflecting on Irrfan’s magnetic charm. “I’m sure people have fallen for your charm even there.” He added that had Irrfan been alive today, he would have been surprised to see how much he is loved and even more so terribly missed. He also recalled a more personal connection — the books Irrfan had once recommended to him, he’s gotten his hands on all of them. He wrote poignantly, “It’s not easy living every day without you… there’s a huge vacuum.”

The note also touched upon Irrfan’s family. “Babil and I play football together, and I’ve become a bit of a guardian to him. Don’t worry, I’m looking out for him,” he wrote, addressing the late actor. “Sutapa and I talk often,” he added, referencing Irrfan’s wife. Shoojit also revealed that he recently completed a film project with Babil. “He’s growing into a fine artist, slowly carving his own space in the industry. I’m sure he’s on the right path, just like you always envisioned.”

He ended the message with a quiet farewell: “I have a lot to say… but for now, I’ll just say adieu, friend. Lots of love. Warmly, Shoojit Da.”

Besides Shoojit, Irrfan’s son Babil and his Pooja Bhatt also remembered him with heartfelt social posts. Taking to his Instagram, the Logout actor posted his childhood with his father with both of them looking alike in sunglasses and wrote, “With you, without you. Life goes on, With me, without me. Soon I’ll be there. With you, not without you. And we will run together, and fly, Drink from waterfalls, pink not blue. I will hug you so tight, and I will cry, Then we’ll laugh, just like we used to. I miss you.”
