Shekhar Kapur recalls how Sridevi shot for Kate Nahin Kat Te from Mr India while battling high fever: ‘You made Saroj Khan swear…’
On Sridevi's 60th anniversary, Shekhar Kapur recalled how the actor shot for his film Mr India's track 'Kate Nahin Kat Te' while suffering from high fever.

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur became deeply emotional as he commemorated the late actor Sridevi’s 60th birth anniversary. The filmmaker fondly remembered an anecdote from his iconic 1987 film Mr India, which featured Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in lead roles. He recalled shooting the film’s track ‘Kate Nahin Kat Te’ with Sridevi as the actor battled with high fever. He shared a still from the song featuring Sridevi draped in her legendary blue chiffon saree. In the long post, he also revealed that he and Sridevi had made a pledge to collaborate on another film together. However, Sridevi’s untimely passing thwarted their plans.
Shekhar Kapur initiated the post by writing, “Happy Birthday Sri..wherever you are.” He went on to recount that during the filming of the song ‘Kate Nahin Kat Te,’ Sridevi was battling a high fever and despite immense discomfort, she chose to perform in the song.
He said, ‘We promised each other at least one more film, after Mr India , if not more. But you left us. Left us with broken hearts and amazing memories. I remember the days we were filming this iconic song iconic image of ‘I Love you’ .. you hid from me that you were running a high fever… and you were in numbing pain.. That everyone advised you to rest, and certainly not allow yourself to get wet, that you could land up being seriously ill .. I only found out from our Choreographer Saroj Khan after we had finished shooting.”

Adding further, he wrote, “You made her swear she wouldn’t tell me .. I remember the days we shot, take after take, day after day. And you would come up to me after every shot .. ‘It’s ok na ?.. you sure .. pucca? shall we do it again? I can see in your eyes your are not fully satisfied’ And all the time you were burning with fever and in a lot of pain .. That’s what you did throughout Mr India .. you had that instinct of knowing whether I was completely happy with your shot or not .. even with a flick of my eyes.”
Mr India remains one of the most iconic films in Indian cinema history. Released in May 1987, the film also featured Satish Kaushik and Amrish Puri. Sridevi passed away in 2018 in a Dubai hotel bathroom. She was in the United Arab Emirates for the wedding of actor-nephew Mohit Marwah, with her husband Boney Kapoor and family.
