Sharmila Tagore says Shammi Kapoor jumped unannounced from a helicopter in An Evening In Paris song: ‘It wasn’t in the script’
Sharmila Tagore and Shammi Tagore gave superhits like Kashmir Ki Kali and An Evening In Paris. The former recalled how Kapoor would do spontaneous things during the shoot of a film.

Veteran Bollywood icon Sharmila Tagore made her debut in Hindi cinema opposite Shammi Kapoor in the 1964 film, Kashmir Ki Kali. The cinephiles got to watch their impeccable chemistry once again in the 1967 movie, An Evening In Paris. But it was not easy for Sharmila to work with the ever-energetic Shammi Kapoor.
During her appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show, the veteran actor recalled the instances when Shammi Kapoor did things which were never in the script, and that too during the final shot. Sharmila told the audience, “It was very difficult to work with Shammi Kapoor and I was a newcomer. He would do something in the rehearsal and something else in the actual take. Kabhi yahan se aa jaate the, kabhi vahan se, kabhi uppar se aa jaate the (He would sometimes come from here, sometimes from there)”.
The Gulmohar actor also shared that there were no directions given to him to fall from the boat in the Kashmir Ki Kali song, “Taarif Karun Kya Uski”. But he did. She also narrated another instance where the late actor stunned everyone with his actions during the shooting of the film, An Evening In Paris.
She narrated, “In Evening In Paris, in the song ‘Aasmaan Se Aaya Farishta’, he was hanging from the helicopter. I was water skiing. He was on the edge of the helicopter, showing off his thighs, very sexy…it was also difficult for the person who was flying the helicopter. In the middle of the shot, without any instructions, suddenly he jumped on the boat. That was not in the script. Shammi ji was like that.” In the song, Shammi Kapoor wore a towel robe.
Earlier, Sharmila Tagore had said that she feels lucky to have made her debut in Bollywood opposite Shammi Kapoor and credited him for her successful career. She attended an event after his death in 2011 and said, “He was so spontaneous and full of life. He was very unpredictable. He never came on time on sets but would always complete his work and leave. I am thankful to God that I got my first break opposite such a legend and because of him I am where I am today.”
She also wrote a tribute to Kapoor after his death. She told The Indian Express, “He (Kapoor) was always game to try something new, to add that little touch to a song that would make it memorable. His fans loved that about him. For the song, “Raat Ke Humsafar”, which is one of the most romantic songs of my career, we shot all night in Paris. He had a tireless energy.”
Shammi Kapoor ruled Hindi cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. He belonged to the famous Kapoor clan and was a brother to Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. He passed away in 2011 due to a kidney ailment.
