Actor Sharman Joshi married his college sweetheart Prerana Chopra in 2000, but this wasn’t a regular college romance. The actor was scared about dating Prerana as she is the daughter of veteran actor Prem Chopra, known for his legendary body of work in Bollywood. Recalling the time when conversations about marriage finally happened, the 3 Idiots actor said that he was terrified of how the senior actor would react.

Sharman was an aspiring actor and well-settled in theatre when his relationship with Prerana progressed towards marriage.

During a latest podcast, Timeout With Ankit, Sharman recalled noticing Prerana on the first day of his college, “When I saw her for the first time, I asked my friend who is this girl sitting on the last bench?”

Sharman shared that when his friend told him about Prerana being the iconic Prem Chopra’s daughter, he just turned around and went to the canteen. The actor joked, “I think Prerna was destined to have someone as wonderful as me in her life…, she lucked out. She got married to me but mujhe Prem ji ke nightmares aate the. (I used to have nightmares about Prem Ji)”

Surprisingly, it wasn’t Prem Chopra who created any trouble in Sharman and Prerana’s union. The Rang De Basanti actor shared, “I was very worried about how her dad’s reaction would be but mom’s was more fierce than dad’s. He is a wonderful guy, he is a gentleman.”

Since Sharman was already into acting and Chopra was an established, popular actor, the latter knew about the struggles in the world of cinema.

“Their concern was real. If I had been at their place, I would have been worried for my daughter too. When you want to be an actor, the chances are slim, and those days especially. Television was not as big as it is today and OTT was not there. So, the chances of making it through were very slim. For me, the good part was that theatre mein tab tak mujhe kaafi pyaar milne lag gaya tha (I had started getting a lot of love in theatre) and you can make a living by doing theatre. Not modest, but if you are leading the space, then you can make a comfortable living,” said Sharman.

Sharman recalled the conversation he had with Chopra about his career when the senior actor asked about his backup plan. Sharman shared, “Phir he asked ki agar nahi ban paaye, to maine bol diya ki ‘failed actor banunga’. (Then he asked me what if I fail to become an actor. So, I said that then I will be a failed actor).”

Sharman Joshi and Prerana Chopra finally tied the knot in 2000, after dating for quite a long time.
