Stunt director Sham Kaushal recently shared insights into the struggles his sons, actors Vicky Kaushal and Sunny Kaushal, faced during their initial years in the film industry. Sham recounted how Vicky encountered rejection and even humiliation during auditions.

Sham shared that he insisted both his sons prioritize education, enrolling them in “normal schools,” believing that schooling would instil a sense of discipline and hard work. It came as a bit of a shock when they expressed their desire to enter the film industry, but he felt he couldn’t deny them the path, knowing that he, too, had earned a living in the same industry.

“I couldn’t say no because I was earning from the same industry. I thought someone might offer them tea out of respect for me, but nobody would invest crores in a film with them. However, since I also came from a village and worked hard, I believed that if they stayed honest and put in effort, they would not be denied,” Sham said. He clarified that while he was always there as a father, he wouldn’t be able to assist them professionally, adding, “As an action director, I never approached anyone to give them work,” he said.

Sham recalled that sometimes, people would refuse to audition Vicky, dismissing it with, “Vicky ka kya audition lena.” However, he urged his sons to turn any humiliation they faced into a source of strength, saying, “Until you experience humiliation, you won’t truly grow. Make that insult your strength.” He recounted how Vicky worked tirelessly for 4-5 years to get a break.

Talking about how Vicky was hesitant to take up a small role in the beginning of his career, Sham said, “Vicky told me that he got a 3-4 scene in Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana and many people were telling him not to do that small role, but I always believe beggars can’t be choosers and I told him to listen to his heart. He later called me and said that ‘I keep looking for work and they are giving me work so I want to do it.’ I stood by his decision.”
