Shaan recalls quitting Sa Re Ga Ma Pa against Himesh Reshammiya’s advice, making Aditya Narayan popular: ‘Don’t do what Mahima Chaudhary did…’

Shaan shared he had to quit Sa Re Ga Ma Pa because the producer who hired him left ZeeTV due to internal conflicts. It was matter of loyalty.

ShaanAditya Narayan became Saregamapa host after Shaan's exit.

Zee TV’s singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa has been one of the oldest running shows in the history of private television in India. Started in 1995, the show was first hosted by Sonu Nigam. It was followed by Bangash brothers (Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash). In 2002, Shaan stepped in as the show’s host. However, he quit abruptly after his producer-director left the show to join Voice of India. His decision, arguably became the reason behind actor-singer Aditya Narayan’s popularity. In a recent interview, he recalled the time when Himesh Reshammiya warned him against leaving the show. Shaan recalled Himesh saying, “You are doing the same mistake as Mahima Chaudhary.”

In a recent interview with Mashable India, Shaan recalled the time and shared, “After the end of one season, makers were prepping for a new season. During that time, something went wrong between ZeeTV and Gajendra Singh. He then left to join Star and started a new show called The Voice of India. Between the two shows, there was a gap. Himesh told me, ‘Don’t leave Sa Re Ga Ma Pa or Zee TV’. But, I was in guilt. I said the man who hired me has left the show then how can I be? I missed that season for that reason and Aditya Narayan stepped in.”

He added, “When I took this decision of not anchoring the show, Himesh told me a very interesting thing. He said, ‘The decision you have taken is similar to what Mahima Chaudhary had done to herself.’ At that point in time, I didn’t understand his statement. Then I learnt that makers of Big Brother first wanted Mahima Chaudhary to join the UK series, which she didn’t accept and then it was passed to Shilpa Shetty, who took it up. She became a phenomenon post that.”

Shilpa Shetty became the first Indian celebrity to be included in the British reality television series. Later, she won the show after gaining 63% of the public vote. This also helped her bag the second season of Bigg Boss as its host.

He shared Himesh was of the opinion that Shaan should have stuck around. “So here, Aditya became Shilpa Shetty and I became Mahima Chaudhary of my story. However, by God’s grace, Voice of India also did well and I kept getting reality show gigs.”

Previously talking to TellyChakkar, Shaan said, “When I left Zee after Little Champs and Aditya took over as host, he made the show popular. He is doing a great job. I think the success of the show primarily depends on the talent of the contestants and the rest is secondary.”
