Sara Ali Khan on growing up with Muslim father Saif Ali Khan, Sikh mother Amrita Singh: ‘My mom said you are an Indian’

Sara Ali Khan, who was last seen in the film Sky Force, has been very open about her love for religious sites like Kedarnath as she often posts about her travels to the holy temple on her social media. In a recent interaction, Sara was asked how she deals with the hate that she gets for “being a Muslim going to a Hindi religious site.” Sara said that she has learnt to tune out the noise. She added that she was quite young when her mother taught her to identify herself as an Indian, instead of associating herself with a religion or caste.

At Times Now Summit 2025, Sara said, “I was very young, in school, and even when my parents were married and we used to immigrate together abroad, I used to always wonder… Amrita Singh, Saif Pataudi, Sara Sultana, Ibrahim Ali Khan, what is going on? Who are we? And I remember asking my mom, what am I? And she told me, you are Indian. And I will never forget that.” Sara is the daughter of actors Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan.

When asked about her mother’s Sikh background, and her father’s Muslim religion, Sara Ali Khan said that India is a secular country. “We are a secular nation and I think that all these concepts, all these boundaries are made and manipulated by people and I don’t adhere to them. I just don’t give it the importance that the other person maybe does,” she said and added that while the trolls bother her, she has learnt to tune out the negativity. “It’s a fool’s errand to change the way other people think. I have to tune it out,” she said.

Speaking about her many trips to Kedarnath, Sara said that it is her personal choice and she does not pay heed to what others say about it. “My personal trip to Kedarnath, with all due respect to anybody who likes it, who hates it, it’s not about any of you. It’s about me. And I feel comfortable there, I feel peaceful there, I feel happy there,” she said.
