Sanjeev Kumar, who was known for his work in Sholay, Trishul, Khilona, among many others, was one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation. The actor died at the age of 47, and many of his contemporaries often remember him as the actor who was completely dedicated to his craft. But, they often mention, in the same breath, that his drinking habit took a toll on his health. In a recent interview, veteran actor Parikshit Sahni, remembered Sanjeev as a mentor, but he also spoke about his lifestyle, that caused his untimely death.
“He had bad habits. After shooting, he drank a lot. He also ate a lot. At 2 in the morning, he would eat a lot and throw bones under the table. That’s why he died. He had a heart attack,” he shared with ANI. In the same chat, he recalled how Sanjeev, fondly known as Hari bhai, was an elder brother to him when they met on the set of the 1968 film Anokhi Raat. “He was like a brother to me. I had just come from Russia and they had cast me in the film Anokhi Raat. I didn’t know Hindi at that time because I spoke Russian for six years and before that I knew English. The Hindi dialogues were very difficult.”
He further added, “So Sanjeev bhai became like an elder brother to me and he used to guide me on how to say the dialogues. I had my pauses all wrong and he taught me when to take a pause. The director used to get fed up and used to ask me to pause but I didn’t know when to pass. It was Sanjeev bhai who came to my rescue, and after that, we remained very close to each other till he died.”
Previously, actor Sachin Pilgaonkar had also reminisced about Sanjeev Kumar’s love for food and revealed how the late actor went to great lengths to enjoy non-vegetarian meals. In a chat with Kunal Vijayakar, Sachin shared, “He had taken another house to eat.” The actor recalled, “He had taken a house on rent, which was a 1-BHK flat in Pali Hill. He had taken this house only for eating non vegetarian because non vegetarian food wasn’t allowed in his house.”
He further added, “So he would order paya, nihari. Sanjeev Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Randhir Kapoor and me, we would all eat together there. The paya had to reheated 4-5 times because we would continue drinking till 5 am and then we would eat the paya. We would eat it with those bakery naans and enjoy.”
