Sanjeeta Bhattacharya reveals Shah Rukh Khan’s reaction to her calling him ‘uncle’ in Jawan, says they bonded over ‘Delhi connection’
In a chat with indianexpress.com, Jawan actor Sanjeeta Bhattacharya talks about working with Shah Rukh and Atlee. She also opens up about getting a chance to sing in the film.

Sanjeeta Bhattacharya’s friends are amazed at how she could call Shah Rukh Khan ‘uncle’ in Jawan! For people who have watched the film, in one of the scenes, the actor, who plays Helena, addresses Vikram Rathore, the senior SRK character as ‘uncle’. The musician from Delhi laughed to share that she too was nervous about it and actually fumbled in the scene, only to be guided by the superstar himself.
The young actor quipped that it was an ‘iconic’ moment in her life as not many can do that. She said that given it was not her ‘usual thing’, she was quite nervous before the shot. “I delivered the line in an innocent way. Then Shah Rukh sir was like, ‘You have to mock me, be a little more cocky.’ He actually guided me, not just in this scene, but throughout the shoot. It was a cute thing to do but all my friends were like ‘Tune unko uncle kaise bola,” Sanjeeta shared with indianexpress.com. She also added how her character was the only one who got saved by ‘both versions’ of SRK, making her feel special.

Talking about working with King Khan, the actor called him ‘amazing and humble’. She shared how he would greet them with hugs and kisses on the head. “He is very fatherly and made sure we felt equal on the set, and never put himself on a pedestal. He is so aware of all the love and adulation that’s showered on him but doesn’t let it go into his head. Working with SRK was such a huge lesson on humility and how one needs to treat their craft like craft, and not behave like a star. He is a master of his craft and to witness it in front of my eyes was just amazing. I hope it’s not a once in a lifetime opportunity and I get to work with him again,” Sanjeeta said. She added that he’s ‘charming, witty and warm’ and it was beautiful to see her idol being so ‘generous and loving’ toward everyone on set.
She also shared how the two also bonded over their Delhi connection and even realised they grew up in the same area. Sharing that given it’s her first film, Sanjeeta did not know what to say to Shah Rukh when they first met. “I come from a music background and was thrown into the world of the biggest cinematic experience. So I was a little overwhelmed. Also, I didn’t want to say the same things about being a fan. He asked me where I was from and I said Rajendra Nagar in Delhi, and he told me how he too grew up there. It was a crazy coincidence. We both are students of Delhi University. That’s how we bonded and soon we were talking about food, the best place for chole bature and our love for coffee. When he got to know I am also a musician, he got a mike and guitar on set and made me sing at dinner for everyone. That was basically the seed of them recognising me as a singer.”

The seed that Sanjeeta mentioned became another high for her as filmmaker Atlee offered her a song in Jawan. The actor penned and sang the Spanish song “Mis Chicas” that played when the girls were first introduced and even near the climax.
Giving details about the same, the actor said that given she had filmed for Jawan for two years, she was prepared to watch herself on the big screen. “But to hear myself in the film was such a special feeling. It all happened a couple of weeks before the release when sir called me and asked if I wanted to write and sing. I wrote the song in 30 minutes and to see it becoming the theme song for the girls was so overwhelming. It’s like all of my talents have been showcased in Jawan.”
On a final note, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya heaped words of praise on the captain of the ship, her director Atlee. “He is such a young director and all his films have been superhit. And he’s entered Bollywood with a bang. Jawan has been creating history and breaking all records. Even with such a big responsibility on his shoulders, he made everyone on set feel so welcome. There were iconic stars and yet he even befriended newcomers like us and treated us in the same capacity. We always felt like part of the same team. He would even get us homemade meals. The team worked so tightly because of Atlee sir. He was just amazing.”
Jawan, which was released on September 7, is currently dominating the box office. The film clocked more than Rs 520 crore at the global box office in just four days.
