Sanjay Leela Bhansali screens Gangubai Kathiawadi in Los Angeles, talks about creating memorable women on screen: ‘We worship the Goddess’

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who screened his film Gangubai Kathiawadi at the Aero Theatre in Los Angeles, spoke about the women in his films and how there is a need for their stories to be told.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is celebrated for his captivating narratives, visually stunning storytelling and strong depiction of women on screen. Bhansali recently enchanted a Los Angeles audience with a special retrospective of his work at the Aero Theatre. The venue was transformed into a museum of Bhansali’s cinematic universe, featuring his acclaimed film Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt in the lead role.

 

 

American Cinematheque hosted the event, drawing cinephiles from all walks of life to immerse themselves in the visionary director’s world. Following the screening, attendees were treated to an exclusive glimpse of Bhansali’s highly anticipated web series, Netflix’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The evening also featured an intimate conversation with Bhansali, where he delved into his creative process and thematic choices.

Discussing his fascination for strong female characters, Bhansali explained, “We come from a land where we worship the Goddess. I’ve seen incredibly strong women throughout my life. Women need to be heard, seen, and their stories need to be told. They are the creators of mankind. We are all born to women-kind.” Bhansali has created memorable female characters such as Mastani, Paro and Chandramukhi, Padmavati and Leela, among others.

In the lead-up to Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’s premiere, Netflix India hosted a star-studded event attended by the likes of Salman Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Rekha, and Genelia Deshmukh. The series, featuring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Shegal, Shekhar Suman, Adhayayn Suman and Taha Shah, is set to premiere on Netflix on May 1. Heeramandi marks Bhansali’s streaming debut, and will also see Fardeen Khan’s to showbiz after 14 years.
