Actor Sanjay Kapoor knows no other way than being honest. The actor, who is currently seen in filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar’s actioner thriller Bloody Daddy, says he got the project within six months of turning down a big show of the filmmaker, after the actor honestly put his point across that he wasn’t charmed by the part he was offered.

Sanjay said he always admired Ali as a filmmaker and so was thrilled when the maker reached out to him with a role for the second season of a show that he doesn’t want to name– hinting at Tandav — but he wasn’t convinced with the character. Despite a no, when the director reached out to him again for Bloody Daddy, he realised that Ali operates from a space of “no ego”.

“Ali was doing a web series that he wanted me to be a part of, it was the second season of a show, without taking names. I was excited to work with him, but I wasn’t excited with the role. He said my role in the third season would be fabulous. I said ab woh banega nahi banega, but at this juncture I am not too sure,” Sanjay told indianexpress.com.

The actor said it wasn’t an “easy decision” to say no to a director of Ali’s caliber, but he had no other choice–and the filmmaker was gracious enough to understand. “Hats off to him, which is something of today’s directors, when he thought I was correct for this role in Bloody Daddy, he called me to his office to narrate.

“I thought it was so cool that here was a man I had said no to six months ago for something else but he was keen I be a part of his other project. When I was going to his office, I had my fingers crossed that I hope I love this role because I really wanted to be a part of this, just to work with this man who I admire a lot, as a filmmaker and a person.”

Sanjay said when he had turned down the part on the show Ali had offered him, he was forthright with him about why it didn’t excite him enough. “He had no ego. First, I wanted to work with this talented director and then I realized he is a person who is also so grounded. I was honest with him; I was not beating around the bush.

“I said I am not a superstar who will get away with it, it has taken me a long time to make this mark and I don’t want to take any wrong decision. I told him I want to work with him, but in a project where I have something meaty, something to offer. He understood my honesty. Everyone wants to work with talented and honest people.”
