Sunil Dutt was one of the most popular stars in the movies in the 1960s and 1970s and continued to make an impact in films until the 1980s, but in 1984, the actor-director joined politics. While he was a highly respected politician, his son Sanjay Dutt believed that Sunil was too ‘gullible’ to be a politician.

In a chat with Filmfare in the early 1990s, Sanjay had said that politics was a “bone of contention” between the son and the father as Sanjay believed that Sunil should quit. “People are constantly making a fool of Dad, taking him for a ride and are constantly returning for repeat performances. I wish he’d realise this and stop being treated like this. He’s too good a man and wants to help others since he is in a position to do that,” he said.

Sanjay Dutt believed that Sunil Dutt was “too nice and honest for politics” and said, “Politics is still a bone of contention between us. I think he should quit. He’s too nice and honest for politics. He wants to do good for the country but he fails to realise that it’s not a one-man job. He’s constantly under tension since he joined politics. I wish he’d stick to making films, something he’s done all his life.”

In the same chat, Sanjay had shared that while people believe him to be a “mama’s boy”, he is actually more influenced by his father. Sanjay’s mother is veteran actor Nargis who passed away in 1981 just days before the premiere of his first film Rocky, which was directed by his father Sunil. “People have often speculated about our relationship, they believed I was a mama’s boy, but the fact is that it is my father who’s influenced me the most. We share our values and priorities,” he said.

Sunil stuck by Sanjay as the young actor battled drug addiction. He also supported his son when it was alleged that Sanjay might have been involved in the 1993 Bombay blasts. In 2007, Sanjay was cleared of all charges but had to serve a sentence due to illegal possession of weapons.

Sunil Dutt passed away in 2005 at the age of 75.
