Sandeep Reddy Vanga reveals why he removed ‘superb’ Bobby Deol-Ranbir Kapoor kiss from Animal climax: ‘It was diluting the unzipping moment’
Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga explained why a tender moment between Ranbir Kapoor and Bobby Deol's characters was removed from the film's climax.

Actor Bobby Deol recently revealed that the final showdown in the blockbuster film Animal included a brief moment where his villainous character, Abrar, plants a kiss on ther film’s hero Ranvijay, played by Ranbir Kapoor. Bobby said that the scene was axed on the edit table by director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who has now given more insights into his decision, and the kiss itself.
In an interview with Galatta Plus, he said, “Yes, actually there was a kiss. Bobby will kiss Ranbir, a kiss on the cheek, and say, ‘Bhai, I didn’t even spend one day with my father’, and he’ll go back and open his zip. It was superb when we were shooting, but I felt like the kiss was diluting the zip. Why I removed it was because Bobby sir gave this expression with a smirk, and a tear falls down his cheek. I felt that was a bigger cinematic high than coming and kissing.”
Recalling Vanga’s narration to him, Bobby told The Quint in a recent interview, “He said, ‘You’re fighting, and you suddenly kiss him, and then you don’t give up, and he kills you’. But he removed the kiss. There was a kiss. I think it might come on the uncut Netflix version. After saying all this, he said, ‘You’re mute’.” Asked about the undercurrent of brotherly love in the climactic scene, Bobby said, “Both their families love each other. We are family. There is love for each other’s brothers. But that moment was also Sandeep’s idea. We were doing the fight sequence, practicising for it, and then he said, ‘You know what Bobby, I want you to punch him and lie on top of him’. It was more about me being powerful. Obviously, the hero always wins in the end. And the shot of me unzipping, it was his idea. He brings that alpha thing to every character.”
Vanga spoke about the moment where Ranvijay unzips his pants, and told Galatta Plus, “When he pulls his zip, there was a clear indication that his entire heroism might die in the climax. But the way Ranbir looks, and even he has tears, and the way he removes the cover of the knife… The way he took a turn, and the sunset is happening, all that really helped the scene. Superb it was.”
Animal has emerged as the third-biggest Indian film of the year, with nearly Rs 850 crore in worldwide grosses. The film opened to massive numbers, but terrible reviews. Vanga said that the criticism doesn’t bother him, but also went on a 20-minute rant in which he singled out critics by name and called them ‘illiterate and uneducated’.
