After 2018’s Raazi, Vicky Kaushal and Meghna Gulzar are back together for the biopic of Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw titled Sam Bahadur. The teaser of the film released on Friday and it looks like another applause-worthy moment for Vicky Kaushal.

The film’s teaser is all about Sam’s love for his job, the Indian Army and how he was ready to give everything for his country but wasn’t interested in the politics that came with it. He says in the teaser, “Mujhe politics mein koi interest nahi hai (I have no interest in politics),” making it clear that serving in a war comes with its political baggage. The film will also show the 1971 war where he led from the front and which ended with the creation of Bangladesh.

Towards the end of the teaser, when Fatima Sana Shaikh’s Indira Gandhi tells him that it is the duty of a soldier to sacrifice his life for his country, he corrects her and says “Soldiers ki duty hai desh ki raksha ke liye dushman ki jaan lena (It is the duty of a soldier to kill anyone who comes in the way of their country’s safety).”

Who was Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw?

Sam Manekshaw was the first Indian Army officer to have been promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. He is credited for India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. He was the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the 1971 India-Pakistan war and was promoted to Field Marshal by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi after the war. His former aide Brigadier Behram Panthaki shared with PTI in 2014 that Sam shared a friendly equation with the former PM. He said, “Once Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was returning Delhi from Paris. Among those present at the airport to receive her (according to protocol) was Sam Manekshaw. As she approached him, Sam told her, ‘Madam Prime Minister, that’s a nice hairdo’. That was the kind of rapport Sam had with her.” He passed away at the age of 94 in 2008.
