Salman Khan was yet to become a superstar after his debut film Maine Pyar Kiya but even in those early days, Salman had a reputation of being “brattish”. In a recent interview, Vivek Vaswani, who put together the 1991 film Patthar Ke Phool starring Salman and Raveena Tandon, recalled how Salman came on board. Vivek said that he wanted to get Salim Khan to write the film and was hoping to raise some money for the film if he could rope in the veteran writer.

Talking to Siddharth Kannan, Vivek recalled, “I had met Salim Khan. Nutan ji coached me and said ‘tell him, it’s not the money. Movies are made with scripts, not money. There was no intention of casting Salman (in Patthar Ke Phool). The intention was that Salim saab will write the script and we’ll be able to cast and we’ll be able to find money. We gave Salim saab Rs 21,000 and he wrote Patthar Ke Phool, which went through many changes later.”

It was around that time that Maine Pyar Kiya was nearing its release and Salim Khan suggested that Salman would suit the lead role here. “He only suggested that we should think about casting Salman. Maine Pyar Kiya was about to release at that time,” he recalled. Vivek was impressed with Salman but since the film was being produced by GP Sippy’s production house and Salim Khan had written films like Sholay and Seeta Aur Geeta for them, he put them in touch with Salman.

When asked about Salman’s “brattish” behaviour, which he was notoriously known for in those days, Vivek said that Salman was very respectful of his elders but wasn’t all that nice to people his own age, or those younger to him. “I didn’t have any brattish behaviour from Salman. You know, surprisingly with his elders, he is very respectful. His parents, Helen aunty, his old producers, very respectful. He behaves brattish with his own age or younger. Like the normal college bullies… but not with a bad heart so I didn’t have a bad experience with Salman,” he said.

Salman has been in the movies since 1989. His last release Tiger 3 collected over Rs 285 crore in India.
