Saira Banu’s family requested Dilip Kumar to discourage her from joining films: ‘This is something I hold against him’
Saira Banu's mother didn't want her to get into the film industry. Yet, the actress marked her Bollywood debut with Junglee, which went on to become a massive hit.

Saira Banu fell in love with the screen image of Dilip Kumar when she was just 12, and decided that she wanted to marry him. At that time, she lived in London and didn’t know him personally but in her late teens, she decided to become an actor. Saira’s family was against this decision and unbeknownst to her, her family members who were friends with Dilip Kumar asked the star to discourage her from joining the film industry. Dilip even refused to star in a few films with her so she would get discouraged.
Recalling how Dilip Kumar refused to do films with her, Saira told ATN Canada, “Do you know he (Dilip) refused film after film with me including Ram Aur Shyam; this is something I hold against him.” In the same interview, Dilip clarified, “The decision was made under instructions. Some of Saira’s family members didn’t want her to be in films and I thought I would be displeasing her family members. I was a good friend of her father as well as her grandfather. They had sent messages to me to persuade her to drop all this. Not that I was successful in doing so, but I thought it would be betrayal if I did a film with her.”
In his memoir, ‘The Substance And The Shadow: An Autobiography’, Dilip recalled the casting of Ram Aur Shyam. The film had Dilip play dual role, for one of his role, Waheeda Rehman was cast as his love interest, however, they were in search of another heroine for his other role after firing Vyjayanthimala for a “tantrum that was uncalled for.”
Dilip recalled, “Nagi Reddy was all admiration for Saira and her recent performances and was certain that her pairing with me in the comedy situations would be a huge draw since she possessed a wonderful flair for spirited comedy. Since it was my practice to take an active interest in the making of my film, I voiced my opinion that I did not agree with Nagi Reddy on this issue because I felt she was too delicate and innocent in appearance for a character that had to have loads of seductive appeal and a bold, buxom appearance.” Eventually, the role went to Mumtaz, which became a career-changing opportunity for the actress.
However, even before wrapping up the film Ram Aur Shyam, Dilip met Saira at her birthday, where he fell in love with her and eventually announced their engagement. In the same year, the couple tied the knot.
Dilip and Saira stayed married until he passed in 2021.
