Rohit Shetty says father MB Shetty used to return home with blood stains and stitches, mother Ratna played Hema Malini’s body double in Seeta Aur Geeta: ‘In my DNA to break bones’
During a recent interview, filmmaker Rohit Shetty shared how during his childhood, he saw his father return home with stitches and blood stains.

Rohit Shetty feels breaking bones is his “family business” as his parents, action director MB Shetty and stuntwoman Ratna Shetty, often suffered injuries on the film sets when they started their journey in Hindi cinema. During a recent interview, the filmmaker shared how during his childhood, he saw his father return home with stitches and blood stains. Even her mother worked as a body double for actresses like Hema Malini and Vyjanthimala.
While speaking to ANI, Shetty remembered how it used to be a field day for him whenever he had PTA in school as all the students would be scared of his father, who was 6 feet tall and had scary eyes. But Shetty also said his father was “softspoken, very humble and an emotional guy.”
MB Shetty started his journey in Hindi films as a stuntman and also played duplicates of many heroes. Filmmaker Nassir Hussain gave him his first break as an action director with the film, Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai (1961). “He directed the action sequences in Deewar, Yaadon Ki Baraat, Great Gambler, Don, An Evening In Paris, and Trishul. He invented the glass break. He got lots of cuts. He used to come home with blood stains and stitches,” remembered Shetty.
Rohit Shetty’s mother Ratna Shetty was Hema Malini’s body double in Ramesh Sippy’s comedy-drama, Seeta Aur Geeta. “My mom was a stuntwoman. She did Seeta Aur Geeta. The Hema Malini you see on the fan is actually my mom,” recalled Shetty, while adding that she also played a body double to veteran star Vyjanthimala. “The Vyjanthimala rolling down the staircase, it’s her, her physique was such,” said Shetty.
The filmmaker, popular for the action sequences in his films, especially the car stunts, feels he is the outcome of his parents’ actions. “That’s why I am like this. It is a family business breaking bones. It is in our DNA to break our own bones,” he said.
Rohit Shetty has recently made his digital debut with the Prime Video series, Indian Police Force, starring Shilpa Shetty, Vivek Oberoi and Siddharth Malhotra. He is back to directing his next, Singham Again, which brings Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh and Akshay Kumar, together on-screen for the first time.
