Rishi Kapoor fought with Neetu Kapoor in a flight when she didn’t allow him to eat cake, recalls Vir Das: ‘Heard some chikad-chikad and then…’
In a recent podcast, Vir Das recalled a fight between Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor over a piece of cake in a business class flight.

Comedian-actor Vir Das, who worked with late actor Rishi Kapoor in a brief role in Namaste London in 2007, has many fond memories of his meeting with him years after the shoot. While appearing on Sakshi Shivdasani and Naina Bhan’s Moment of Silence podcast recently, he recalled the awkward moment when he heard the veteran actor fighting with his wife, actor Neetu Kapoor, in a flight. Vir also revealed that Rishi got up from his business class seat and came to sit with him, when Neetu didn’t allow him to have the dessert because of his health issues.
During the conversation, he said, “Cool guy. Rishi Kapoor is like, ‘Beta, tera naam kya hai?’ I said, ‘Sir, Vir Das.’ He said, ‘Shake my hand, son.’ When you shake Rishi Kapoor’s hand, you become Tina Munim from Karz. You know what I mean? All your masculine energy just drains, and you are his heroine in that moment. So, I’m just shaking his hand and I’m like, ‘It’s the dude from Karz, right? Shaking my hand, and he’s like, ‘Beta, tu bohot accha actor hai. Shake my hand and promise me you’ll keep acting.'”
Revisiting his meeting with Rishi Kapoor five years later, the comedian shared, “Not lying, it’s a true story. Within 3 seconds of him doing that, he left. Somebody put a chhatri over my head in the unit. So, like that’s what I needed um, to act- Rishi Kapoor’s handshake. He’s a cool guy.”
He said, “I’m in the back of a flight, and like in the front of the flight, I hear some chikad-chikad happening between a couple in business class, ‘You can’t eat the cake.’ ‘I want to eat the cake.’ ‘You’re not allowed to eat the cake. The doctor said no cake.’ ‘I want the bloody cake. What the f**k?’ Then, Rishi Kapoor stands up.”
“He’s like, ‘Arre, Vir.’ He comes and sits down next to me, and he tells me this story. He’s like you know… and he gave me this list of guys who started with him. Then at some point, he’s like, ‘You’re going to eat your cake?’ Then Rishi Kapoor ate my cake, but yeah, you can eat your cake if you’re Rishi Kapoor,” Vir added.
Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor tied the knot with each other on January 22, 1980, and have two children–Riddhima Kapoor Sahni and actor Ranbir Kapoor. The actor passed away at 67, on April 30, 2020, in Mumbai. He was fighting leukaemia for around two years, but his health started deteriorating in 2020.
