Rishi Kapoor was known for speaking his heart and blunt personality. The late actor’s behaviour remained the same even with his son Ranbir Kapoor when it came to sharing his opinion about his films. There were several instants when Rishi Kapoor was quiet critical about his son’s work and even predicted that his certain films wouldn’t work including his debut film Saawariya. In a recent conversation Ranbir Kapoor shared his conversations with his father about his work.

Speaking at the ongoing International Film Festival of India, Ranbir Kapoor recalled, “When he saw Barfi a day before its release, he called me and he was like, ‘Ranbir tu acting achi karleta hai par ab art films karna band kar (You do good acting but stop doing art films)'”

Similarly, he recalled the time Rishi called him to ask about Rockstar’s climax. Ranbid said, “A day before Rockstar release, he called me again and said, ‘Woh end mein ladki wapas aajati hai ki mar jati hai? (Does the girl return in the end or dies?)’ He was always fond of complete films.”

Calling him a true artist, Ranbir shared how it came naturally to him to assess a project or set. He said, “He was so perceptive. I still remember when I was shooting for my debut film Saawariya in Karjat, my father had come to see us shoot. When he came on set, and looked at the set.. he started to say things like, ‘Why is this Buddha here, why do we have so many windows? Why are there not more people in frame, why is it just Sonam and you walking? Why is it night and not morning?’ He asked me several questions, and I told him you are old school, things have changed.”

He added, “I remember he sat in his car post that and told my mom, this movie is not going to work. He believed you can’t alienate your audience with place and time. There has to be some relativity. At that time, I didn’t value what he said, but now I completely understand what he meant.”

Ranbir Kapoor has been quiet open about his complicated relationship with his father. Previously, speaking to Nikhil Kamath, Ranbir recalled the distance between his father and him. “The one year we spent together in New York while treatment was on, he often spoke about that. I was there for 45 days and one day he came and started crying. He has never shown that kind of weakness to me. It was so awkward for me because I didn’t know if I should hold him or hug him; I really realised the distance. I feel guilty that I didn’t have the grace to let go off the distance between us and go and hug him, give him some love.”
