‘RD Burman was jobless for five years, his famous music room was dirty’, shares Abhijeet Bhattachaya: ‘I don’t have work’
Abhijeet Bhattacharya recently recalled RD Burman's lowest phase, when the legendary composer had lost most of his work to Bappi Lahiri and Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

RD Burman is considered as one of the greatest and most successful music directors of the Hindi film industry. He composed songs for over 300 films, in a career that spanned several decades, from the 1960s to 1990s. However, there was also a phase when the composer had no work for nearly five years and was overshadowed by Bappi Lahiri and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. After the arrival of younger music composers, filmmakers stopped approaching him for work. During this time, misunderstandings were created between RD Burman and other industry insiders. In a recent interview, singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya recalled one such incident where RD Burman, who once celebrated his success with scotch, went on to ignore him.
Speaking to Shubhankar Mishra, Abhijeet Bhattacharya recalled, “People start to get troubled when someone new suddenly comes along and becomes everybody’s favourite. Something similar happened in the case of RD Burman and me. People started to be bothered by his closeness towards me. He once made a drink for me to celebrate my success. People started to plant rumours and create misunderstandings between us. They started to spread rumours that I sang for his rivals or helped them imitate his work. I was fairly new, and I was helpless. I couldn’t do anything to stop those rumours. This impacted my relationship with RD Burman.”
He added, “However, RD Burman did realise that I was being wronged. I tried visiting him a couple of times after I became famous. I often passed his home on my way to Rajesh Roshan’s house. I would often spot him sitting in his balcony in the evenings. He was jobless for over five years.”
During this phase, Abhijeet tried a couple of times to visit the legendary composer. He said, “Once I went to see him, he had a house help Manu Da and he attended to me at the door. After seeing me, he lied to me, ‘Pancham Da is not home.’ I knew he was lying by the tone of his voice. I attempted to visit him again, and this time he was sitting at the spot which usually used to be his music room. It used to be so lively, filled with musical instruments, singers, and musicians. Now, the place had lost its charm. It seemed like nobody had visited the room in a very long time, and neither had anybody cared to clean the space.”
“When he saw me, he told me, ‘Hey, you’re doing so well in your career, why are you here?’ And I said, ‘Spending even fifteen minutes with you makes me feel nice.’ He told me, ‘I am jobless right now’. Maybe he was trying to tell me that when he gets a big gig, he will approach me,” shared Abhijeet.
After a while, RD Burman composed music for 1942: A Love Story, but passed away just before the film hit the screens. It was one of his last works. The soundtrack was on the 13th spot on the list of 100 Greatest Bollywood Soundtracks of All Time, according to Planet Bollywood.
