Ranveer Singh on his career slump as Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marches towards success: ‘Detached from numbers, but learnt from failures in recent past’
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani has earned Rs 67 crore so far at the box office and has been hailed as one of the best films of Karan Johar.

Actor Ranveer Singh on Thursday reflected on his career slump which seems to have come to an end with his latest Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Ranveer said he prefers to chase unforgettable characters rather than be obsessed with box office numbers, something which he doesn’t understand anyway.
Post pandemic, Ranveer delivered three consecutive underperformers at the box office, including cricket drama 83, Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Rohit Shetty’s comedy Cirkus. But Karan Johar‘s romantic comedy drama Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which released last Friday to unanimous praise, has turned the tide for the actor as the film is recording excellent box office numbers.
At a special event of the movie, Ranveer Singh was asked how does he process his last few films when his work, though appreciated, couldn’t make an impact at the box office. The actor said the saying that one learns more from their failures than success is true as he himself learnt a “few things” in the recent past.
“I don’t understand this numbers game at all, and I try to remain as detached from it as possible. I want to focus on the craft, performance, character and do my best to contribute to what is truly a collaborative effort. So if a film is a success, it’s not my own, it’s everybody’s together and the same goes for failure as well.
“As they say, you learn more from your failures than your successes and I have learnt a few things in the recent past. At the moment, I’m delighted at the love being shown towards Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. I’m very grateful,” he said.
Ranveer, who started his career with the 2010 romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat, said he is fortunate to be an actor and aims to “really protect” the artiste side of him. Ranveer said ups and downs are part of life and he doesn’t want his focus to be shifted: from doing parts which the audience will always remember.
“It’s almost miraculous that I get to be a part of Hindi movies. Ups and downs are part of life, but I’ve always believed that the process is the price itself. If people love it, that’s sone pe suhaga… I’m happy that Rocky is another feather in the cap, in the array of characters that are very dear to me. My super purpose is to build a body of work that I can look back and be proud of. So, from Bittoo Sharma to Rocky Randhawa, it’s been quite an incredible journey,” he added.
Also starring Alia Bhatt, and veterans Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Dharmendra among others, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani has earned Rs 67 crore so far at the box office and has been hailed as one of the best films of Karan Johar.
