‘Ranbir Kapoor is very well-read, most family conscious in Bollywood,’ says father-in-law Mahesh Bhatt, recalls how Alia Bhatt was shaken by first flop
Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt revealed a new facet of son-in-law Ranbir Kapoor and also addressed how daughter Alia Bhatt dealt with her first flop.

Over her illustrious career, actor Alia Bhatt has amassed a huge fan following due to her ability to balance between glamorous and inquisitive roles. But she too has faced failure in her ambitious pursuit of becoming one of the best actors in the country. In a recent interview, Alia’s father, veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, talked about one of those instances, where his daughter failed to hit the mark.’ He also spoke about son-in-law Ranbir Kapoor, revealing he is very conscious about the family he belongs to and its legacy.
While talking to Siddharth Kannan, Mahesh was giving a run down of all his children and how the four of them dealt with major issues in their lives. Coming to Alia, he said, “When Alia had tasted her first failure, which was the film Shandaar. It had come after a few hits, so she was shaken to the roots by that. Even though she is a tough girl on the outside, a failure is a failure. Something like that reminds you that you are just an ordinary mortal human being; maut aapke ghar mai bhi hogi. (Death will come to your door as well.) That you too will have that relationship with failure, and we all have to go through that season of life. There is no person in this industry who hasn’t gone through something like that, including the greats like Raj Kapoor sahab.”
While he was talking about Alia, the filmmaker was asked about Ranbir Kapoor and the kind of conversation he has with him. He said, “Ranbir is a very sorted kid, and I have never seen someone so family conscious in the industry. He loves his home and his daughter. He is also very well read, and no one really knows that; he reads a lot and consumes a lot of cinema as well. Whenever we talk, it isn’t necessarily about films. We talk about very basic things, and he is a man of few words, but he listens. That is the sign of a great actor, the listening capacity.”
Mahesh recently also talked about how Alia is a “new-age heroine” who is able to strike the perfect balance between family and work. He appeared on the Humans of Bombay podcast and talked about how Alia takes Raha with her whenever she goes to shoot and how she managed to create a separate space for her daughter.
“Alia chose to get married, and she had a child, and she works. She just went to Milan for the Gucci event, carrying her daughter with her. I recently did an ad with her and Mr Bachchan. I saw that there was a vanity which was for Raha. And Alia says, ‘Why don’t you go and sit in Raha’s room, Papa?’ I didn’t want to contaminate it. It had the feeling of a nursery school. It almost looked like a temple. I said, ‘No, no, no, the old man has no place there.’ But that’s the new-age heroines. They go to work, they’re parenting, and they go to Gucci events carrying their baby with them,” said Mahesh.
