Veteran actor Arun Govil, known for his portrayal of Lord Rama in Ramanand Sagar’s classic television adaptation of the Ramayana, has expressed his disapproval of the fundamental changes that he believes have been made to the epic story in director Om Raut’s newly-released film Adipurush. “The audience has given its verdict,” he said in a new interview, and added that he was bothered by the clips that he has seen of the film on social media.

The actor clarified that he hasn’t yet seen the film itself, but stated that discussing modernity and mythology in the context of Ramayana is not right. He highlighted the importance of presenting the characters accurately, and in an interview with ABP, he said that ‘it is not done’ to turn the Ramayana into a ‘Hollywood ki cartoon film‘.

Govil also mentioned that he had a discussion with the makers of Adipurush following the release of the first teaser, during which he shared his opinions and inputs. However, he did not share any specific details about the conversation, or what transpired between him and the film’s team at that time. The actor also mentioned that he dislikes the language used in the film. He prefers to use restrained language and does not support colloquialisms being used in the context of Ramayana.

Talking about the depiction of Ravana in the film, Arun Govil said, “What was wrong with the depiction we have all known and loved for all these years? What was the need to change things? Perhaps the team doesn’t have proper faith in Lord Rama and Sita, and that is why they made these changes.” In a recent interview with AajTak, Adipurush co-writer Manoj Muntashir claimed that the film isn’t an adaptation of the Ramayana, but is merely inspired by it.

Among the various adaptations of the Ramayana story in television and film, Ramanand’s Ramayan on the Doordarshan remains popular. Ramanand’s son Prem Sagar has also expressed displeasure about Adipurush. In an interview with Hindustan Live, he said, “Om Raut has tried to make a Marvel film. Papaji (Ramanand Sagar) did take some creative liberties while making Ramayana but he understood Lord Ram. He read various scriptures and then made a few changes but never messed around with facts.” Helmed by Om Raut, Adipurush has received a mixed response from critics and audiences. Although the film had a strong opening at the box office, it has faced criticism and trolling for its dialogues and visual effects.
