Ram Gopal Varma ‘didn’t think’ Hrithik Roshan would become a star when he first saw him: ‘Nobody signed him before Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’
Ram Gopal Varma said that one cannot simply predict what will work and what won't, and cited the example of how the industry didn't think Hrithik Roshan would become a star before his debut film.

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently revealed that when he first saw Hrithik Roshan, he didn’t think the actor would become a star. He said that this under-confidence wasn’t limited only to him, but the industry as a whole wasn’t sure that Hrithik had it in him. This is why everybody was waiting to watch how Hrithik’s debut film, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000) performs. It was only after the film became a runaway success, RGV said, that they started taking Hrithik seriously.
In a video shared on his YouTube page, RGV said, “When I saw Hrithik Roshan, I didn’t think he would become a star. Most of the industry also did not think, because of which they didn’t sign him. Before his first film Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai released, nobody signed him. And once he became a superstar everybody is after him.”
RGV, in his prime filmmaking days, has delivered hits like Shiva (1990), Rangeela (1995), Sarkar (2005), among others. However, he has been going through a lull in the last few years, despite being as prolific as ever. The filmmaker, responding to why his recent films haven’t worked, said, “Forget about the number of flops I’ve made. The fact that if you knew it, why would you make a flop? It is as simple as that.”
“So, when I say that I know how to make a film and then I make Shiva, how do I explain how I made Aag? Which means, Aag was by intention, Shiva was by accident. Why was it an accident? I already gave you the proof. If I knew what to do why did I do what I should not do. It is as simple as that. In both, my intention of making Shiva and Aag would be the same because I am spending one to one and a half years, time and effort and everything. Why would I do something which I do not think will work? Which means I thought it would work, which it didn’t,” he added.
Hrithik has more than lived up to the promise of his debut film, having delivered massive blockbusters such as War, Super 30, and more. His latest film, Fighter, grossed over Rs 300 crore worldwide.
