Rakesh Roshan mortgaged his house for Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, mortgaged Mercedes for a song in Kaamchor: ‘Hrithik never knew’
Rakesh Roshan shared that he decided to mortgage his house for Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and did not tell his son Hrithik Roshan about it.

Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan left no stone unturned to launch his son Hrithik Roshan in Bollywood, in the year 2000, with the film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. In a recent interview, Rakesh shared that he wanted to fulfill his every dream with the film. Since he wanted to make the film on a grand scale, he decided to mortgage his house but never told Hrithik about it.
In a chat with Mid-day, Rakesh shared that he wanted to make a romantic film because he hadn’t before. He said, “I found Krabi island, where rocks are in the sea, there’s blue water… that was my dream. Then my dream was a place like New Zealand, like Christchurch and Queenstown where I could shoot that song ‘Na Tum Jaano Na Hum’ so those were my dreams. I wanted to fulfill my dreams as a filmmaker so I said ‘let me take a chance’.”
Rakesh said that he shared his ideas with wife Pinkie, and added, “Hrithik never knew, I never told him. Only my wife knew about it. I said I am mortgaging the house, maybe if I require, I will take money, otherwise I will try to manage. But it so happened that I managed it in the funds I had. Had the film not done well, then I would have to shift somewhere else or… but I took that chance.”

Rakesh recalled that years before this, he mortgaged his Mercedes for Rs 2 lakh for the shoot of the song ‘Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi’ for Kaamchor. “I said I want to shoot that song in Ooty or Kashmir because that song is so beautiful, I need beautiful locations for that song. So I mortgaged my car for that, aadat vahan se padi actually. For one song, I mortgaged my Mercedes for Rs 2 lakh. I thought this is so easy, if I make a good film, this can work. I took the same risk in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai,” he said.
Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai proved to be a massive hit, and launched Hrithik’s career.
