Rakesh Roshan had mortgaged his house and cars for Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai; Hrithik Roshan recalls heated argument with dad: ‘He gave it back to me’

In Netflix's The Roshans, Hrithik Roshan recalled the arguments and differences that he would have with his father, Rakesh Roshan, while making Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. He also narrated the story of how he realised what his father had put on the line for him.

A lot was on the line with Hrithik Roshan’s debut film, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. There was immense buzz surrounding the film, directed by his filmmaker father Rakesh Roshan and featuring fellow debutante Ameesha Patel. He had a huge family legacy to live up to, and tremendous personal battles to overcome. The pressure, as can be expected, caused friction between him and his father. They reflected on the film’s tense production in the newly released Netflix documentary series The Roshans, and Hrithik recalled the moment he realised everything that his father had done for him.

Hrithik suggested that he didn’t have the smoothest relationship with his dad, who belongs to a generation of men that aren’t taught to show affection and vulnerability. “My father was, is, and always will be someone who loves deeply. But his expression of love was the kind that was taught to him when he was growing up. I don’t think that he was granted the kind of compassion from the world, so the only way he learnt was to be hard on himself. And that is how he expresses his love, and it’s often misunderstood,” he said.

He continued, looking back on an argument that led to a showdown between the two of them, “I always saw the glass half-full. I had not colour-corrected in two or three scenes, because I was handling that. And the overseas prints had already been sent. So, I came to my dad, really upset that, ‘How could you let that go?’ And I think that was the first time that my dad gave it back to me. He gave it back to me in my face. He turned to my mom, and he said, ‘I am doing everything for him, and he’s sitting here and he’s complaining’. And that’s the night I found out, my mom told me, that the house was mortgaged, the cars were mortgaged… I realised how much was at stake.”

Hrithik’s mother, Pinkie, said that she often had to play the mediator between father and son. She said, “There were days when I found him a bit sad sometimes. I would ask him, ‘What happened? You don’t look good’. Then he would come out of it eventually tell me that he wanted to do a scene a different way, but papa wanted it another way. I used to feel bad, as a mother. From his room, I would go to my room and talk to my husband, and I would ask what happened, and he’d say, ‘Hrithik knows nothing! I’m the director!'”

Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai turned out to be a massive blockbuster, and turned Hrithik into an overnight sensation. His remains the last major Bollywood debut of a future superstar. Hrithik has sustained his stardom for over two decades, and will next be seen in the film War 2.
