Prosenjit Chatterjee reacts to turning down Salman Khan’s role in Maine Pyar Kiya: ‘Let us forget it’
Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee had recently revealed that he was selected to do Sooraj Barjatya's Maine Pyar Kiya, but the role eventually went to Salman Khan.

Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee, who is also sometimes seen dabbling in Hindi projects, will soon be seen in the Amazon Prime period drama Jubilee, where he essays the role of Srikanth Roy. The actor has been promoting the show with other cast members and filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane. During an interview for the same, Prosenjit revealed that he was the one who was first selected for Salman Khan’s lead role in the Sooraj Barjatya romantic drama Maine Pyar Kiya.
When the actor was asked to elaborate about his decision to not do the film, by Bollywood Bubble, Prosenjit refused to reveal more details and simply dismissed the question by stating, “Leave it. Forget it. Let’s talk about Jubilee.” After a pause, the actor mentioned, “See, honestly speaking, I told you. My last Hindi film was Shanghai. And, as you know, from the last 10 to 12 years, I’m doing not those mainstream cinema. I have shifted and I worked with all new directors.”
However, only a few days ago, the actor had revealed the real reason behind turning down Maine Pyar Kiya. The actor told rediff.com that he was the one ‘selected for Maine Pyar Kiya’ and that he is still in touch with the Barjatyas till date: “Till today, I am in touch with the Barjatyas and Bhagyashree (the female lead of MPK).”
When asked what made him say no to Maine Pyar Kiya, which went on to become a big hit and establish Salman as one of the leading actors of Bollywood, Prosenjit said, “My Bengali film Amar Sangi with Vijayeta Pandit had became a huge hit. My dates were blocked, so much as I would have loved to do Maine Pyar Kiya, I had to reluctantly refuse the offer. I was doing a Bengali film with Pahlajji (Nihalani), who was a big producer then. Pahlajji came to me one day and said, ‘Puttar, I have a subject for a Hindi film, you must do it. You are a Bombay ka hero.’ Aandhiyan was a good subject though David Dhawan (director) was not too well known then. Mumtazji, like Madhuri (Dixit) today, is evergreen, but we were playing mother and son and it didn’t go down well with the public.”
Jubilee also stars Aditi Rao Hydari, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Shweta Basu Prasad among others. It will release on Amazon Prime Video on April 7.
