Madhu Chopra, actor Priyanka Chopra’s mother has opened about her daughter and son-in-law, singer Nick Jonas, calling him a ‘solid, sober guy; practically a Punjabi’. Priyanka and Nick got married in 2018 and have a daughter Malti Marie together; their cross-cultural wedding remains a talking point, with Nick being termed ‘national jiju’ of India.

Madhu revealed that she found out about Priyanka and Nick dating each other via the media. “Priyanka hadn’t told me anything about Nick but I saw media reports that they had been spotted together and asked her… She said if there’s anything, I will tell you. She later called me and said that I am coming for some work to Mumbai and Nick also wants to come. I asked her whether he wants to travel to Jaipur etc, see India. Priyanka said ‘I will go to work and he will stay at home, do his songwriting.’ He came and I saw him as a serious, sober guy. I had no inkling… their behaviour was absolutely normal towards each other,” Madhu recalled.

She remembered that Nick took her out to lunch and won her over after the conversation. “When he came to India and met me, he took me to lunch when Priyanka was not around. Nick asked me what kind of boy I would want for Priyanka. So, I listed all the qualities, and he simply took my hand and said, ‘I am that guy. Can I be that person? I promise that nothing from your list will be left unchecked’. I was very happy, I saw him as a solid person,” she said.
She also said that the 10-year age-gap of the couple was not even a concern for her or the family. “Koi farak nahi padha. Aadmi acha hai. Ladki ache hai. Both care for each other. That’s all. (It didn’t matter. The man and woman are good; They both care for each other. That is what matters). Uss nazar se dekha hi nahi. I was so happy and ecstatic.”
Madhu also appreciated Nick for appreciating Indian culture and rituals. “He is very respectful, appreciates Indian culture, lets us be as Indian as possible. Priyanka often says that he is a Punjabi.” She also said that while Nick was prepared for being called Nick jiju, one particular sobriquet surprised him. “All of them know about him being called Nick jiju; his family is aware of this too. Priyanka had told him. However, he wasn’t expecting National jiju.”
