Priyanka Chopra was told heroines do films like Fashion when no male star wants to work with them: ‘It took a lot of fighting’
Priyanka Chopra recalled how people around her reacted when she signed on to star in Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion, and said that she was told it could be a career-killer.
Priyanka Chopra will soon be seen in Citadel. (Photo: Priyanka Chopra/Instagram) Actor Priyanka Chopra reflected on the negative chatter around her when she signed on to do Fashion, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. She said that people told her female actors only do films like this at the end of their careers, or when no male star wants to work with them anymore.
Released in 2008, Fashion also starred Kangana Ranaut and Mugdha Godse. It earned Priyanka a National Film Award for Best Actress, and established her as a serious performer after a slew of roles in star-driven projects. In an interview with Prajakta Koli, Priyanka said that her decision to do the film was met with its share of raised eyebrows. Priyanka said that she didn’t have people waiting to work with her, and that she had to take the bull by the horns herself. “It took a lot of fighting, and saying that, ‘Theek hai, main chhoti film karungi agar mere balboote pe hoga, par ache se karungi (I’ll do a small film, but I’ll do it well).’ Like Fashion.”
She continued, “Jab maine Fashion ki, mujhe kitne saare logon ne bola tha, uss zamane mein, ke ‘Yeh toh heroine apne career ke end mein karti hain jab unko National Award chahiye hota hai. Heroine apne career ke end mein filmein apne shoulder pe leti hain kyunki unko heroes ke saath kaam nahi mil raha hota hai (When I did Fashion, people told me that female actors only do solo films like this at the end of their careers, when they want to win awards and because no male hero wants to work with them). I was just three-four years into movies when I did Fashion, and everyone told me that I wouldn’t get another job if this film fails. I didn’t know any better.”
Priyanka made headlines last month after revealing on Dax Shepard’s podcast that she was bullied and ostracised in the Hindi film industry because she had ‘beef’ with certain people. She said that this was partially the reason behind her moving abroad.
Priyanka has since established herself as a major draw in Hollywood. This year, she will lead two high-profile projects, the first of which is the big-budget spy series Citadel. Following that, Priyanka will star in the romantic drama Love Again, co-starring Sam Heughan. She is also planning a Bollywood comeback, with Farhan Akhtar’s Jee Le Zaraa, co-starring Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif.
