Priyanka Chopra called Fashion her ‘career defining’ film, was told she wouldn’t get another job if it failed: ‘For the first time…’
Priyanka Chopra-starrer Fashion starred her in the lead role and was a gamechanger for the actor's career. The Madhur Bhandarkar directed film completes 15 years today.

Priyanka Chopra-starrer Fashion, which the actor has previously described as a “career defining” film for her turns 15 on Sunday. The film, which also starred Kangana Ranaut in a pivotal role, was a gamechanger for Priyanka as it released at a time when Priyanka had six back-to-back flops at the box office but this film changed the trajectory of her career. It also got her a National Film Award for Best Actress.
In an earlier conversation with Dax Shepherd on the Armchair Expert podcast, Priyanka revisited this time in her life and recalled that she had realised that it was essential for her to take control of her career and choose parts that had something concrete because otherwise, she would be forgotten in the male-dominated Hindi film industry. “I took on a movie on my shoulders because it was necessity, which turned out to be career defining for me. I was terrified. We worked on that script for six months,” she said.
Priyanka said that at the time, she had a magazine cover where they had written ‘Finished’ on her face and her mother was starting to get worried for her. Speaking about Fashion, she said that she made this movie as a collaboration with director Madhur Bhandarkar and shared that this film changed how she worked. “For the first time, I felt like I had agency in what I was doing and that really changed how I worked after that,” she said.
In another chat with YouTuber Prajakta Koli, Priyanka had shared that “it took a lot of fighting” to make a “smaller film” like Fashion because it relying solely on her shoulders. “When I did Fashion, so many people told me that heroines do these films at the end of their career, when they want a National Award. Heroines take the responsibility of a film when they are the end of their career because they are not getting any work with men,” she said. Priyanka recalled that “everyone told me that I wouldn’t get another job if this film fails” but she did it anyway.
Fashion had Priyanka Chopra playing the role of an aspiring model Meghna Mathur who gets to Mumbai and breaks through as a successful model. Through her rise to the top, Meghna’s character starts compromising on her morality and her fight to get back to her roots forms the rest of the story.
