Pamela Chopra, wife of the late filmmaker Yash Chopra, was a muse for him and it was soon after they got married that Yash started his own banner, Yash Raj Films. He created his production company in 1973 when he made Daag and stepped out of the shadow of his brother BR Chopra.

BR Chopra was a renowned name in the movies since the 1950s with films like Naya Daur, Kanoon under his name. Even Yash’s earlier directorials like Dhool Ka Phool and Waqt were produced under BR Films. So when the brothers went their separate ways and Yash started his own production company, many blamed Pamela Chopra for the break-up.

In an interview with Rediff in 2015, Pamela said that the family gave her “the feeling that I was not welcome” so she assumed that the separation happened because of her. She said, “Everyone kept telling me not to blame myself for the split. But they always gave me the feeling that I was not welcome, so I thought maybe it happened because of me.” But she underlined that through all of this, Yash stood by her. “Yash would reassure me every time,” she recalled.

Pamela recalled that the unpleasantness between the brothers started way before they were married but they moved out only after Yash was married to her. “The unpleasantness had started even before I was married; that was the reason we shifted out of the house,” she shared.

Although the brothers went their separate ways after Yash started his own company, Pamela said that her husband was completely “indebted” to his brother. “He was completely in awe of his brother, and indebted to him, till the end. Between him and his brother there was nothing. Unfortunately, the sister-in-law (B R Chopra’s wife) was not happy with what had happened and the fact that he had moved out. The son (Ravi Chopra) was very upset as well,” she said.

Pamela said that there was a “certain amount of distance” between the two families and they did not meet often. But even when they did, there “would be some coldness” between them.

Pamela passed away on Thursday in Mumbai. She was 74.
