Indians can watch an atomic bomb explode and its devastating effects in Oppenheimer, but not a nude Florence Pugh. The Christopher Nolan film, which released last Friday, has left a section of Indian fans shocked and amused over a scene featuring actor Florence Pugh, in which she was originally naked, but the Indian prints had her covered in a CGI-made black dress.

The scene in question involves Cillian Murphy as Robert Oppenheimer, meeting his former lover psychiatrist and physician Jean Tatlock, played by Pugh in the film. The sequence featured the two actors–both naked–talking to each other. In the print that released in the country, Pugh’s body is covered in a black dress, to avoid showing any skin.

Oppenheimer, released in the country by Warner Bros. Discovery, reportedly underwent ‘self-censorship’ to bypass any major trouble with the Cental Board of Film certification (CBFC), which includes taming down of the nudity (with the CGI-black dress), a voluntary call taken by the makers and the distributors. The Universal Pictures film, which released in the US with an ‘R’ rating, got a U/A certificate in the country.

According to its censor certificate, Oppenheimer in fact got only two modifications, one about the insertion of anti-smoking banner whenever necessary and the second, muting of the word as***le and the deletion of the same from subtitles.

While Oppenheimer continues to do record breaking business in India, it has also come under scanner for “objectionable” scenes. A scene in the film shows the characters of Murphy and Pugh have sex, as he reads out verses from an ancient Sanskrit scripture, purportedly the Bhagavad Gita. The sequence has generated controversy over social media.

Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur is reportedly upset with the CBFC for clearing the film’s sequence and has asked the officials to remove them from screenings of the movie in Indian theatres, The Indian Express has learnt. Action could also be taken against the officials who had given the clearance, sources added.
