Despite strong competition, Oh My God 2 (OMG 2) pulled people to the cinema halls in huge numbers on its first Monday (non-holiday). OMG 2 box office collection on Monday stood at Rs 12.06 crore and the film crossed the Rs 50 cr mark within four days of its release, bringing its total collection to Rs 55.17 cr, reported Sacnilk. It has become the second film after The Kerala Story to have a Monday better than its opening Friday.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh also reported, “OMG2 has a SUPER-SOLID Monday – the day that makes or breaks movies… Monday HIGHER than Friday, says it all… Fri 10.26 cr, Sat 15.30 cr, Sun 17.55 cr, Mon 12.06 cr. Total: ₹ 55.17 cr. #India biz. Sure, OMG is a brand, but the love OMG2 is getting is reflecting in its #BO numbers… This franchise has only enhanced its status in the eyes and hearts of moviegoers.”

The film starring Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam, with an extended cameo by Akshay Kumar, had hit the theatres along with Sunny Deol’s masala entertainer Gadar 2. Down south, Rajinikanth’s Jailer was also released on the same day. So, before the release, the trade pundits were wary about OMG 2 picking up at the ticket counters. However, a positive word of mouth from the audience and film critics aided the film. Meanwhile, Gadar 2 is also maintaining its momentum at the box office and has earned Rs 39 cr on its first Monday.

OMG 2 comes almost a decade after the first film in the franchise OMG, starring Paresh Rawal and Akshay, impressed the cinephiles. The film’s success comes as a breather to Akshay, who has had a dry spell at the ticket counters since his last five films (Selfiee, Ram Setu, Raksha Bandhan, Samrat Prithviraj and Bachchhan Paandey) tanked at the ticket counters.

Now, Tuesday (August 15) being a holiday, there are chances for OMG 2 to pick up pace and grow at the ticket counters. The film, which was awarded an A certificate, delivers a message about sex education.

Film critic Shubhra Gupta wrote in her review, “Entering ‘OMG 2,’ I held some apprehensions. Given the backdrop of 2023 and the complexities of today’s India, could a film navigate religious themes without taking a didactic or biased stance? The sequel tactfully avoids the complexities of diversity by embracing a remarkably progressive and liberal viewpoint. It compels us to overlook the absence of representation from other faiths. The result is a captivating film that challenges the skepticism uninformed adults harbor towards our youth, as they explore their bodies with natural curiosity and openness.”
