Nishaanchi Trailer: Anurag Kashyap takes a detour into masala hinterlands of UP, debutant Aaishvary Thackeray in double role. Watch
Nishaanchi Trailer: Starring Aaishvary Thackeray in a dual role, Anurag Kashyap comes up with his version of a masala entertainer.

Anurag Kashyap, a director celebrated for his gritty and realistic filmmaking, appears to be making a dramatic shift with his latest project. The trailer for his new film, Nishaanchi, has been released, promising a full-blown masala entertainer. The film seems to be a tribute to classic Bombay cinema, complete with the timeless trope of twin brothers. Nishaanchi stars newcomer Aaishvary Thackeray in a dual role as Babloo and Dabloo, twin brothers who follow vastly different paths. Joining them is actress Vedika Pinto as Rangeeli Rinku. The trailer suggests a narrative exploring how their choices shape their destinies.
Set in the early 2000s in the hinterlands of Uttar Pradesh, the film’s central conflict appears to revolve around veteran actor Kumud Mishra, who seemingly plays the main antagonist. In a particularly striking scene from the trailer, Mishra’s character asks Babloo to retrieve the body of Rangeeli Rinku. In a moment that captures Kashyap’s signature cinephile style, his character responds: “So you decide whether you would be like to Mughal-e-Azam or Hum Aapke Hai Kaun? Both were blockbusters.”

The release of Nishaanchi is highly anticipated, especially as Kashyap’s previous directorial effort, Kennedy, has yet to be released in India despite premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Meanwhile, his other upcoming film, Bandar, starring Bobby Deol, is already generating international buzz and is set to have its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Speaking about Nishaanchi, Anurag Kashyap previously stated, “Nishaanchi is a story I’ve carried with me for years. It’s my most cinematic film with a classic story at its center involving emotion, betrayal, action – everything I grew up loving in Hindi films.”
In a separate conversation with Galatta Plus, the director also revealed that the film is his tribute to the masala spirit of Hindi cinema, which he believes was best captured by legends like Salim-Javed and Mehboob Khan.
