Being a celebrity doesn’t shield one from patriarchy or societal pressures — something Bollywood actor Nimrat Kaur experienced firsthand when she began her journey in the film industry. In a recent interaction, Nimrat admitted that her family didn’t take her acting career seriously until she starred opposite Irrfan Khan in The Lunchbox. She revealed that, until then, her family assumed she was merely having fun with her “hobby” and expected her to return home, get married, and “settle down” sooner or later.

Speaking to News18, Nimrat said, “My work and I were taken seriously because there was Irrfan in the project. Prior to that, they said that shaadi ka time aa gaya hai (the time for marriage has come). Those marriage questions stopped after The Lunchbox. It took that film to convince them what I was capable of.”

Nimrat recalled that during her struggling phase, when she was living “paycheck-to-paycheck,” no one in her family viewed her profession as a serious career. She said, “When I was six-seven years into the business, I was doing ad films. It was a paycheck-to-paycheck life. I didn’t know where my next paycheck was going to come from. In that scenario, I was often asked when I was going to continue with my profession, as if I were pursuing a hobby! My being in Mumbai was looked at like ‘oh, let her have some fun and then she’s going to come back and live her life as she should.'”

Nimrat admitted that she wants to take her time when it comes to marriage and instead focus on herself and her career. She also spoke about how marriage isn’t necessarily the route to feeling “settled,” as she sees many unions around her that seem disingenuous. She said, “I, in fact, feel like people are most unsettled and unhinged in marriages that are a front. That to me is more worrisome than a woman, who by virtue of her life, isn’t married at this point in time. Just leave her be! It’s mostly people who haven’t been able to take their own decisions and make brave choices in their lives that impose their own conditioning on others whenever they see them breaking the mould a little bit.”
