Yesteryear actor Mushtaq Khan, who was recently seen in Gadar 2, has opened up about his career and long association with Mahesh Bhatt. Interestingly, it was Salim Khan, who referred Mushtaq to Mahesh Bhatt for the film Kabzaa (1988). And in Khan’s word, post that ‘Bhatt saab ne mujhe nahi chhoda (He didn’t leave me).”

Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Mushtaq Khan recalled how he was doing plays when he first arrived in Mumbai. It was then that Salim Khan noticed him performing and called for him. The actor shared that it was the time Salim-Javed had gone separate ways, and Salim Khan had just given a big hit in Naam. He shared how he excitedly went to meet the writer-director and was touched by how he came to greet him and heaped praises on him. “He hugged me, shook my hands and said how I had done a good job in that play. I started meeting him after that and soon he told me that he had recommended my name to Mahesh Bhatt for the film.”

What followed next was almost a comedy scene from a film. Mushtaq, confident with Salim Khan’s support reached out to Mahesh Bhatt, and was shocked to see a long queue waiting for him. Stuttering with nervousness, he introduced himself to Mahesh Bhatt, who was first quite curt with him, and then asked him to meet his brother Mukesh Bhatt. “He said he was busy with shooting so I should meet Mukesh and Robin Bhatt. They asked me for my number and said would call if something comes up,” Mushtaq narrated.

Interestingly, the actor did not even have a landline then and would pay his grocery shop one rupee for every call they received on his behalf. After about 15 days, he got the calls from Bhatt and that’s how he got Kabzaa. Khan shared how Mahesh Bhatt continued to work with him post that. The two worked together in films like Swayam, Gunaah, Aashiqui, Junonon, Sadak, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi, Sir, Gumrah, Milan and Naraaz, among others.
