Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor’s second collaboration after Roohi, Mr and Mrs Mahi, seems to be on the right track as it minted Rs 16.85 crore in the first weekend at the box office. The film received mostly positive reviews and exceeded expectations in terms of box office collections on day one, which was also celebrated as Cinema Lovers Day. The film, however, picked up pace on Sunday, raking in Rs 5.50 crore.
The Sharan Sharma directorial needs to maintain pace at the box office to recoup it’s estimated Rs 40 crore budget. It has been a largely underwhelming year for Bollywood with only a handful of films crossing the Rs 100 crore mark, and even fewer actually posting profit.
The film had an overall 22.24 percent Hindi occupancy on Sunday, with the maximum footfall of 32.27 percent seen in evening shows. The film also had a maximum of 764 screens in the NCR region, where it had an overall 21.25 percent occupancy. This was followed by Mumbai, where it had 585 shows and 22.25 percent occupancy.
Rajkummar Rao’s previous film, Srikanth, released on May 10, is still running in theatres. Mr. and Mrs. Mahi has outperformed Srikanth at the box office, with Srikanth earning Rs 11.7 crore in its first three days compared to Mr. and Mrs. Mahi’s Rs 16.85 crore.
Mr. and Mrs. Mahi revolves around a married couple who share a passion for cricket. They begin training in the sport due to the wife’s natural talent. The film is directed by Tushar Hiranandani and produced by T-Series and Chalk and Cheese Films. The film also stars Alaya Furniturewala, Jyothika, and Sharad Kelkar in key roles.
