‘Mithun Chakraborty was shooting for 41 films, was warned not to do more,’ recalls son: ‘He held Guinness World Record for most releases’
Mithun Chakraborty was once working in 41 films at the same time when he was asked to limit the number of films by the actors' association.

Mithun Chakraborty rose to stardom after the release of Disco Dancer in 1982 but with the decline in the quality of films across the decade, and a simultaneous increase in the home video market, the economics of films went for a toss for a short while. Mithun did not hang up his boots in this era and continued to work as a leading man across this period. In fact, he worked in so many films that at one point, he held a Guinness World Record for having the most number of releases in a calendar year.
In a recent chat with RVCJ Movies, Mithun’s son Namashi Chakraborty said that his father has done 249 films as a leading hero and in 1989, he had 19 releases. When asked how Mithun managed to do all of that, Namashi shared that films were often backed by independent producers in this era and it was much easier to put a film together. “That was the era when stars didn’t have much time. Today’s stars have lots of time. Today, films are not made by independent producers. Back then, anyone could approach a star and make a film. Today, everything is done by corporates and they are a part of an agency. Back then, stars had the freedom to do whatever they wanted,” he said.
Namashi then recalled that his father, along with other stars, got a notice from CINTAA (Cine and TV Artistes Association) in 1993, asking them to not work in more than 40 films and at that point, Mithun was working in 41 films. “In 1993, I remember, my father, Govinda and Rahul Roy had gotten a letter from CINTAA saying that they can’t do beyond 40 films, and my father had 41 films on floor, out of which, in 35, he was the hero,” he shared. Govinda was one of the biggest stars in the 1990s and Rahul Roy was the new star on the block after the success of his 1990 film Aashiqui.
Namashi shared that his father did not have much time in those days as he was constantly shooting. He revealed that he didn’t even get to know his father much until he was 10 years old because his father was hardly home. “I am not surprised by the numbers because I didn’t have any time with my father growing up. And I got to know my Dad when I was 10 because he would leave for the shoot in the morning. By the time he would come back, I would be asleep so I had no clue who he was. I have seen him work hard for decades and he is still at it,” he said.
Mithun was last seen in Vivek Agnihotri’s The Bengal Files. Mithun was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2024.
