Mimoh Chakraborty defends dad Mithun Chakraborty’s decision to do B-grade movies: ‘He did it for money, for his family’
Mimoh Chakraborty said that his father Mithun Chakraborty only did B-grade movies to provide for his family and secure his business.

Actor Mimoh Chakraborty said that he fortunately never witnessed his father Mithun Chakraborty falling into depression after delivering a hit, but explained why Mithun did so many B-grade movies in quick succession in the early 2000s. Mimoh said that everything his father did, he did for his family, and to secure their future.
At the time, Mithun was past his prime as a superstar, and had invested in a hotel in Ooty. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Mimoh was asked what he thought about his father experiencing a lull in his career, or him doing low-budget movies that could be seen as below his stature. Earlier this year, Mithun’s younger son, Namashi, said that Mithun shouldn’t have agreed to do films such as Gunda, because they were beneath him.
He said, “Honestly, my mother has seen his downfalls more than us. When we were kids, dad was a megastar, and mom would tell us that whenever he delivered a flop, he would go into depression. He was doing four shifts a day at that time, spending two hours each on each set. In fact, he introduced the concept of vanity vans here. Touch wood, us kids never witnessed those dark phases.”
But he did see his father do a string of B-grade movies. Defending his father’s decisions, he said, “He did it for us, he did it for the hotel. Every unit from Bollywood movies, and also from the South, they’d stay at our hotel, so there was always an influx. He was doing it for the money, but it wasn’t like his producers were going into losses. If they were spending Rs 70 lakh on a film, they were getting Rs 1 crore in return. He never had any qualms. Even today, he’s doing Dance Bangla Dance, Dance India Dance… Everything he does, he does it for us. I’m very proud to say this, but his first and last thought is always his family.”
Mimoh also revealed that he and his siblings would get ‘scared’ when Mithun told them about his struggles. He wouldn’t have a place to sleep when his roommate would kick him out, he wouldn’t know where he was going to get his next meal from, and he’d use the bathroom at a gym in exchange for cleaning it.
