Manoj Bajpayee reveals Anurag Kashyap was holding his feet during cliff scene in Satya: ‘I have a fear of heights…’

In a recent interview, actor Manoj Bajpayee aka Bhiku Mhatre talked about the 'Mumbai Ka King Kaun' scene in the film Satya.

Actor Manoj Bajpayee impressed critics and the audience alike with his turn as Bhiku Mhatre in the iconic 1998 film Satya, directed by Ram Gopal Varma. Co-written by director Anurag Kashyap, the movie is still remembered for its memorable scenes. Now, in a new interview with Lallantop, Bajpayee, who has a fear of heights, revealed the story behind the ‘Mumbai Ka King Kaun’ scene in Satya, which was set on a cliff.

During that scene, the actor had to stand on a cliff and say his iconic dialogue ‘Mumbai Ka King Kaun, Bhiku Mhatre!’ However, due to his fear of heights, the actor wasn’t able to do the shot without help. During the interview, he recalled shooting the scene and said, “They were trying a lot. I remember that Anurag Kashyap was holding my feet during the close-up shot. In fact, in one of the shots, Saurabh Shukla, who is a healthy man, wrapped a black cloth on himself and held my feet, so that the long shot can be done. However, people said, ‘Kapda se zyada tu hi dikh raha hai (You are visible more than the cloth).’ It was a funny incident.”

In the long shot, it wasn’t possible for anyone to hold his feet, hence director Ram Gopal Varma asked Manoj Bajpayee to mumble anything without looking down and step back immediately. “So for the long shot, Ram Gopal Verma came to me and said, ‘Don’t say the dialogue in this one, just do the action that you did in the close-up shot and say 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. As soon as you are done with counting 10, even if the camera doesn’t say cut, just come back,” he shared.

Bajpayee added, “He said that I understand your problem and what you are going through. Hence, I actually did that in the long shot. I kept asking, ‘Hua ki nahi hua? Hua kya? (Are we done or not?).’ It was done in one take. I was just looking above, and not below me.”

Meanwhile, during a session of Idea Exchange, Manoj Bajpayee had revealed that he will be reuniting with Satya director Ram Gopal Varma for his next film. “The good news is that he is going to make his next with me. We are trying to find some time and figure out dates. He is not off the radar. He was just taking a long break.”
