Makarand Deshpande says he behaved like spoilt child during Swades song ‘Yu Hi Chala Chal’: ‘Told Shah Rukh Khan tu gaadi chala main maze karuga’
Makarand Deshpande described working on Swades as a reunion of friends, as he had worked with Shah Rukh Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker on the TV show Circus.

How was the AR Rahman chartbuster “Yu Hi Chala” from Swades shot? Like a reunion of old friends. Actor Makarand Deshpande has revealed the behind-the-scenes stories of the time he teamed up with filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker and superstar Shah Rukh Khan for a special appearance in Swades.
Makarand Deshpande had worked on the TV show Circus, which also starred Shah Rukh and Ashutosh, years before he turned a director. In an interview with Siddharth Kanan, Makarand took a trip down the memory lane and recalled filming for the journey song. The actor said Khan was supposed to drive the caravan and the had a walkie talkie in place to communicate with the team.
“It was a difficult shoot. There was camera mounted on top of another vehicle next to us, Ashu was there. In our caravan, Kira Rao was there, who was the first AD, she would inform us about the shot. Aur main bada spoilt sa behave karne lag gaya jaise pehle tha (and I started behaving like a spoilt child). I said, Shah Rukh, you have to handle the walkie talkie, I can’t understand all those buttons. He said, ‘Chill, I will do it.’ He had to drive and be on the walkie talkie,” he said.
The actor said he was “spoilt” because he was working with friends, who reminded him of the “comfortable” times. Makarand said he was “spoilt to the extent” that during a Kailash Kher alaap in the song — where he had to play with his hair — Shah Rukh helped him.
“Just imagine, I am in a caravan, your friend is your director, who is giving you so much love and respect, bagal mein bada Khan baitha hua hai (to your side is Shah Rukh Khan), he is a superstar, who you are telling openly, ‘Tu chala gaadi, tu ye kar, woh kar’ aur tum khud aaram se maze kar rahe ho! It was like the old times comfortable times.
“The Kailash Kher alaap was the most difficult thing, but I was getting pampered as well. Ashu was like, ‘I will take the shot of you waking up as well as well as you untying your hair…’ Khan is sitting there, while my shots are happening! Then Shah Rukh says, ‘Ok let me also get your alaap done’ and he literally gave me the beats. I would look at him and do my alaap! Who was teaching whom, who was enjoying it? We shot the song for three-four days and bonded like we did when we first met 13 years ago,” he recalled.
The actor is currently seen in Dev Patel’s actioner Monkey Man, which is still awaiting its India release.
