In a significant setback to director Amit Sharma’s biographical sports drama Maidaan, which has been struggling to maintain momentum at the box office despite favourable reviews, the Ajay Devgn-starrer witnessed a major slump in its collections on its first Monday in theatres.

After recording its highest single-day collection of Rs 6.4 crore on Sunday, Maidaan’s India nett collection saw a 76.56 per cent dip, with the film’s earnings standing at Rs 1.5 crore on Monday, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. The film’s total domestic nett collection now amounts to Rs 23.5 crore.

Despite a similar dip in collections, Maidaan’s competitor, the actioner Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, outperformed the sports drama, securing a nett collection of Rs 2.5 crore in the domestic market during the day.

On Monday, Maidaan achieved an overall occupancy rate of just 9.99 per cent in the Hindi market. The morning shows began with a meagre 6.65 per cent occupancy, which rose to 9.92 per cent during the afternoon, 11.10 per cent during the evening screenings, and peaked at 12.28 per cent at night.

It’s worth mentioning that this marks the poorest performance for an Ajay Devgn film on its first Monday in recent memory. Despite receiving less favourable reviews than Maidaan, his films Shaitaan (Rs 7.25 crore), Bholaa (Rs 4.5 crore), Drishyam 2 (Rs 11.87 crore), Thank God (Rs 1.6 crore) and Runway (Rs 2.42 crore) all fared better.

In her review of Maidaan, The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote, “Ajay Devgn plays Syed Abdul Rahim with a patent sincerity and only a hint of the slo-mo swagger. His rag-tag team has the kind of composition so syncretic that it makes you ache with nostalgia.”
