Following an extremely dull opening, making it one of the weakest in Ajay Devgn’s career, director Amit Sharma’s biographical sports drama Maidaan showed signs of improvement over the weekend, recording its highest single-day collection on Sunday.

The movie, which hit the screens on April 11, recorded an India nett collection of Rs 6.40 crore on its fourth day in theatres on Sunday, marking an 11.30 per cent surge, industry tracker Sacnilk reported. Maidaan’s total domestic nett collection is now Rs 22 crore, with a global gross of Rs 32.2 crore.

On Sunday, Maidaan achieved an overall occupancy rate of 22.87 per cent in the Hindi market. The morning shows began with a 12.48 per cent occupancy, which rose to 29.04 per cent during the afternoon and peaked at 31.36 per cent in the evening. However, there was a significant decline during the night screenings, with the occupancy rate standing at 18.61 per cent.

Nevertheless, the competition posed by Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is affecting Maidaan’s dreams of improving its performance at the box office. The actioner, despite being panned by all, earned Rs 9.05 crore on Sunday, recording a 6.47 per cent improvement in its daily figures. The film’s total domestic net now stands at Rs 40.8 crore.

Maidaan is Ajay’s second release this year, following the supernatural horror film Shaitaan, which emerged as the fourth-highest-grossing Indian film of 2024 and the second-highest in the Hindi market, earning over Rs 205 crore worldwide.

In her review of Maidaan, The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote, “Ajay Devgn plays Syed Abdul Rahim with a patent sincerity and only a hint of the slo-mo swagger. His rag-tag team has the kind of composition so syncretic that it makes you ache with nostalgia.”
