Actor Madhuri Dixit’s husband, Dr Sriram Nene, took to his YouTube channel to talk about the silent habits that can lead to serious health concerns. He divided his video into three parts, and spoke about harmful routines that individuals follow after they wake up, during the day, and just before bed. Some of these habits, he said, could be linked to cancer. He also warned how eating too quickly and scrolling before bedtime can be harmful, and advised people to start small. He said that changing even one of these habits can have a ‘compounding’ effect.

He said, “The way you start your mornings sets the tone for your entire day. Hitting the snooze alarm interrupts your deep sleep cycle. Get rid of your snooze alarm. Get up properly and sleep properly.” Dr Nene continued, “Scrolling floods your brain with dopamine, because it gives you a high and satisfaction. It also creates a stress and distraction before you’re fully awake. It raises cortisol, narrows attention and creates a reactive tone for the rest of the day. Engaging with your phone first thing in the morning can expose you to stress-inducing information, triggering anxiety and setting a negative tone for the rest of the day. Additionally, the blue light emitted by your screens may interfere with your melatonin production, potentially disrupting sleep patterns. I would hesitate to touch my phone for the first hour or two.”

He also highlighted the ill-effects of ‘drinking coffee on an empty stomach’, and said, “For most individuals, it doesn’t lead to health issues. While coffee can stimulate stomach acid production, research indicates that it doesn’t typically cause digestive problems.”

Dr Nene then moved on to mid-day habits. He said, “Eating too fast bypasses your fullness, which can lead to overeating and indigestion. It also increases your post-meal blood sugars. It can lead to weight gain, because the brain needs a solid 20-30 minutes to register fullness. When you eat fast, you’re more likely to consume more calories before feeling satisfied. Mindful eating habits, like chewing thoroughly, and setting utensils down between bites, and avoiding distractions, can help you eat slower.” Underlining the harmful impact of dehydration, he said, “Even mild dehydration reduces focus and causes headaches. It also affects kidney function and blood pressure. Some of the most common symptoms of dehydration include thirst, dry skin, fatigue, dark urine or decreased urine output.”

Dr Nene described sitting as ‘the new smoking’, and explained, “Long, uninterrupted sitting slows circulation, tightens muscles, and weakens metabolism. It’s linked to diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and even cancer. It raises the risk of muscular disorders.” Concluding his video, Dr Nene spoke about pre-nighttime habits. He said, “Late night screen time; we’ve all been guilty. It delays your sleep onset, and reduces the quality of your sleep. Overthinking before bed; racing thoughts before bedtime increases stress. It delays sleep, and delays your body’s natural recovery process.”

Dr Nene married Madhuri in 1999. They have two sons, Arin and Ryan. Madhuri and Dr Nene lived in the United States for several years after their marriage, during which time Madhuri didn’t work in the film industry. She returned to India in the mid-2ooos to restart her career, and Dr Nene moved with the kids in 2011.
