Kareena Kapoor said that getting married used to be the “biggest taboo” for female actors in the film industry, but admitted that this mentality has changed over the years. According to the actor, filmmakers are now prepared to take chances. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar India, Kareena was asked if Bollywood is changing its approach to ageism. The actor replied, “I think so. You have to wear your age proudly. Today, women have become brave. For female actors, the biggest taboo was to get married…but now your marital status doesn’t affect your career.”

She added, “Filmmakers are now taking risks and willing to work on off-beat scripts, and give different people a chance. In the end, it is all about feeling and looking confident.”

Further talking about maintaining a work-life balance, Kareena said that there is no secret formula to achieving this. “It is up to you to decide what you will or won’t do. I want to be able to say no to the things that I don’t want to do, because I don’t feel like leaving my kids alone or because I don’t want to be seen at some awards show.”

In an interview with the Guardian, Kareena had earlier opened up about the taboos around pregnancy. She said, “Most Bollywood actors, when they get pregnant, don’t leave the house because they are stressed about how they look, that they are no longer this glamorous diva, worried if they put on some weight that people will judge them. There’s still a lot of those taboos,” she said. “But I just wanted to own it.”

The actor will soon be seen in  Hansal Mehta’s murder mystery show, and in Rhea Kapoor’s The Crew. Kareena will also make her digital debut with The Devotion of Suspect X.
