Kareena Kapoor comes from the illustrious Kapoor family of Bollywood, which is often referred to as the ‘first family of Hindi cinema’. Her grandfather Raj Kapoor was one of the pioneers of Hindi cinema and even her great-grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor was one of the most renowned actors of his time. Yet, it was an unspoken rule that women in the Kapoor family don’t work in the film business. None of her aunts, who were born or married into the Kapoor family, were actors, and those who were established actors like her mother Babita or aunt Neetu Kapoor, left the business after they tied the knot. But, Kareena’s sister Karisma was the first woman from the family who not only decided to become an actor, but emerged as a star in her own right. At The Indian Express’ Express Adda event in Mumbai on Monday, Kareena said that the credit for this goes to her father, who changed with the times and encouraged her and her sister to pursue a career in the movies.

“I think my father has been one of the coolest fathers ever,” she said. Kareena’s father is actor Randhir Kapoor, who is the eldest son of Raj Kapoor. Randhir and Babita got married when they were both actors. They even worked in Randhir’s directorial debut Kal Aaj Aur Kal, which also starred Raj Kapoor and Prithviraj Kapoor.

Kareena acknowledged that it was harder during Karisma’s time as she was the first Kapoor woman who stepped into acting and broke the myth about Kapoor women not being actors. Karisma made her debut in 1991 with Prem Qaidi. “It was difficult during Karisma’s time because she was one of the first Kapoor girls but… not to ever say that my father didn’t support her and not to ever say… Even now, if he calls me and he knows I’m shooting, he will be apologetic that ‘oh no, okay, focus on your work’. He’s extremely cosmopolitan, extremely open-minded, he’s always he has just been so nice about everything,” she said. “My father has been way ahead of his times,” she said and called him a “friend and guide.”

Speaking about the Kapoor women not working in the movies earlier, Kareena said that those “times were different” “Back in the 1970s and stuff, it was different because times were different. That when they got married they never really worked, but I’m glad that my father moved with the times because that’s what it is about. You have to keep changing yourself for your children. That’s also important, and not live in archaic times,” she said.

Kareena made her debut in the year 2000 with Refugee and is still an active part of Hindi movies. She will next be seen in Sujoy Ghosh’s Jaane Jaan.
