The release of the Justice Hema Committee report on issues faced by women in Malayalam cinema has sent shockwaves through various film industries. At the same time, it has also empowered many survivors to come forward and speak out against male industry members who have misbehaved, harassed or assaulted them. The findings of the panel have prompted widespread concern, leading Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to announce that the state government is working on formulating a comprehensive cinema law to ensure women’s safety on film sets. This development has also sparked calls for similar measures to be adopted in the Hindi film industry to protect the rights of women in cinema.

Writer Kanika Dhillon, known for crafting strong, edgy female characters in films like Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba and Manmarziyaan, commented on the report and its potential implications for women in the industry. Speaking to News18 Showsha, she said, “Whenever focus is drawn to the malpractices and prejudices against women in any industry, it definitely makes people across industries take note and retrospect.”

She added, “Kudos to the Hema Committee report for putting the spotlight on the plight and malpractices that women have been subjected to! Only when the focus and the spotlight are directed to these issues, will the change begin to improve the work environment and professional spaces for women across industries.”

In a recent interview with indianexpress.com, Malayalam actor Parvathy Thiruvothu also discussed the Justice Hema Committee report but expressed concerns over the delay in justice. She stated, “But if you ask me personally, I felt we were put through a long waiting game. We expected quicker action. If justice delayed is justice denied, then justice has been delayed here for so long, and the report only came out after a lot of pushing. We were initially told that the process would be confidential, and we trusted the process as it is a government process. But then, it is like a doctor seeing a patient, writing a prescription and refusing to give it to the patient saying he will keep it. Hey, I need the prescription, I need to buy the medicine.”

Recently, after actor Siddique and director Ranjith were booked for crimes against women, the Kerala police filed a rape case against actor-politician M Mukesh too based on the complaint filed by an actor. In addition to Mukesh, prominent actors Jayasurya, Edavela Babu, Maniyanpillai Raju, film production controller Noble and pro-Congress lawyers association leader V S Chandrasekharan have also been accused of sexual abuse.
