‘People think it’s some chudail practice, weird cult’: Kalki Koechlin opens up about her water birth experience
Kalki Koechlin opened up about her experience with water birth and shared that people don't use this method because it is expensive.

Kalki Koechlin grew up in the lap of nature in Auroville and has largely lived in places where she was always surrounded by nature. So when Kalki was pregnant, she decided to opt for a water birth for her baby, which she felt was more natural for the child. In a recent interview, Kalki opened up about her experience and also shared why this wasn’t seen as the norm. She also shared that some people can find it a “weird” cult-like or “chudail practice”, which puts them off from choosing this.
In a conversation with Aleena Dissects, Kalki said, “I feel this should be the standard practice. Water birthing is much easier on the body, much easier when you are giving natural birth.” Kalki shared that there has been a lot of research about the same suggesting that this is a better practice for the woman and the child. “There’s so much research that it’s easier for the baby when it comes out because it was in the amniotic fluid already so it is not a big shock, and for the woman, in terms of recovery, it’s a smoother process in general. I think it should be the protocol,” she shared.
When asked why people don’t op for this, Kalki said that there isn’t much information about it in public domain, and it is also more expensive that other methods of child birth. “I don’t know why people don’t opt for it. I guess here its more expensive so that’s a big reason why people don’t opt for it but there are places where you can do it in a hospital also. It’s not like some exclusive thing. You can. But people probably are not informed enough about it,” she said and added, “They just think it’s some weird cult or something, some weird chudail practice. I don’t know what they are thinking.”
Kalki wrote a book titled Elephant In The Womb soon after she welcomed her daughter Sappho in 2020. In a chat with Hindustan Times, Kali shared that she never felt the urgency to go back to her old body after giving birth. “There was no pressure to go back to my tiny body because people didn’t see me, and we all know actors are always expected to look a certain way. While it initially felt like the stomach would never go, I did eventually get my body back after a year,” she said.
Kalki is married to Guy Hershberg and the couple lives in Goa with their daughter.
