Juhi Chawla, who is one of the co-owners of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) with Shah Rukh Khan and her husband Jay Mehta, recently opened up about the time when they were putting everything together before the first season of Indian Premiere League (IPL). Juhi, at an event by Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry event, shared that Lalit Modi approached her and Shah Rukh to buy a team as he wanted “glamorous people” as team owners in the IPL.

When asked about her entrepreneurial side, Juhi said that a lot of the legwork during those initial days was done by Shah Rukh and Jay. Talking about the inception of the tea, Juhi shared, “Lalit wanted that the owners should be glamorous people have some glitz to them and he approached us and said, Shah Rukh and you be one of the team owners. At that time, I thought in India, cricket and film industry, those are the two most popular things, I thought how nice if we can be a part of cricket.”

Juhi said that even after they got the team, they didn’t know how to run a franchise. “We didn’t know anything about running a cricket franchise. So I remember going to Shah Rukh’s house for meetings, where (from) putting the jingle together, to thinking of what uniform they’ll have, everything was done in house,” she said and recalled how she didn’t like the first uniform of the players. “He made it black and gold and I was not happy with it. I thought ‘what is this black and gold?’ Because black is considered inauspicious,” she said with a laugh.

Juhi recalled that all the Kolkata Knight Riders meetings happened late at night in those early years and she stopped attending them soon after. “Shah Rukh used to be busy during the days. He was working a lot so our meetings would be scheduled for 10 pm. They would start by 11 pm. Then everyone would talk for a while so by the time the meeting would start, it would be 12-12:30 pm and I would start dozing off in the meeting. After 2-3 meetings, I stopped attending. I said you guys do this, I am not coming,” she shared.

KKR has won the IPL final thrice – in 2012, 2014 and in 2024. The team is still owned by SRK, Juhi and Jay.
